What Music Feels Like

What is the relationship between one's body and the earth? What makes us part of the land? And what parts of the land make us?

Drawing upon her own archival images, Jude Samman uses surrealism to explore questions of what it means to be connected to the land and the meaning of home. What Music Feels Like features a series of oil paintings that traverse the senses of touch, taste, and sound, lending a sense of intimacy to her world-making. The results are landscapes reflective of her memories, with each element symbolizing an aspect of her deeply rooted relationship to her homeland.

'Sands of Resurrection ‘رمال القیامة’ invites viewers to bask in the radiance of newfound possibilities and the invigorating energy of emancipation. The timeless desert sands serves as a narrative intertwining the motifs of Arab liberation, regeneration, and spiritual revival. The pomegranate, considered as a fruit of paradise, is revered in Islamic tradition as a symbol of fertility and abundance. It’s emergence from the desert soil signifies the beginning of a transformative journey towards freedom, and is a poignant representation of the divine

‘Sands of Unshackled Dreams’ portrays a poignant narrative of the Palestinian struggle for liberation and resilience. The cat, the observer and bearer of truth, embodies the spirit of the Levant, echoing the generations’ yearning for freedom and liberation. The watermelon, an existing symbol of Palestinian resistance, is ruptured, transforming it into the onset of liberation. It acts as a testament to the triumph of a people who resisted against all odds to surrender their identity. The Jasmine flower is a symbol of enduring beauty and unwavering hope amid adversity

The Eternal Flame - الشعلة الأبدية

The courageous work of Fatima Shbair inspired Eternal Flame #1 and #2.

Shbair, a photojournalist living in Gaza, provided me a doorway through her

photos to the current genocide unfolding on her home. Fatima’s dedication to

documentation stands as a testament to the enormous resiliency and bravery

displayed by Palestinian journalists in the face of ongoing erasure.
